Big Walnut Creek starts near Mount Gilead, Ohio in Morrow County. It flows south to eastern Delaware County and parallels Alum Creek. It passes to the east of Sunbury and into Hoover Reservoir. The reservoir crosses into Franklin County and flows through Gahanna and Whitehall. Near Obetz it is joined by its principal tributaries Alum Creek and Blacklick Creek at the Three Creeks Columbus Metro Park. Big Walnut Creek is a large watershed which exists within four different counties and has a drainage area of 557 square miles.
The Friends of Big Walnut Creek (FoBWC) are a local watershed group which advocates for Big Walnut Creek in that part of its watershed from Hoover Dam south to the confluence of Big Walnut with Blacklick and Alum Creeks at Three Creeks Park in SE Franklin County.
The Friends of Big Walnut have strongly encouraged the OEPA to designate specific guidelines to the City of Columbus to maintain current flow conditions if the RWL is initiated and that higher quality water be released to compensate for the lower flow regime.
