Bill Doss is among the co-founders of the influential Elephant Six Collective, based in Athens, Georgia, and also one of the key creative forces behind The Olivia Tremor Control, one of the leaders of the collective, and later, following the band's break-up, The Sunshine Fix. The Elephant Six Collective were a group of American musicians who spawned some of the most notable independent bands of the 1990s, including the Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Apples in Stereo and of Montreal. ... Doss is a native of Ruston, Louisiana, where he befriended Will Cullen Hart, Robert Schneider and Jeff Mangum. Before the Olivia Tremor Control Doss had recorded under the name The Sunshine Fix, and self-released Spiraling World of Pop, which later helped comprise The Olivia Tremor Control songs. Doss, Hart and Mangum soon formed what was later to become the Olivia Tremor Control. After Mangum left the band to pursue his own Neutral Milk Hotel, Hart and Doss began to pool their musical influences, Hart being a proponent of experimentalism, Doss of 60's pop such as The Beatles and The Zombies. Before the Olivia Tremor Control, Doss had spent some time in the army, after which he joined New York based band Chocolate USA before heading back to Athens, Georgia, where he is still a resident. Doss is married to free-lance photographer Amy Hairston Doss, whom he met while both were attending Louisiana Tech University. The city of Ruston is the parish seat of Lincoln Parish, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. ... After the release of the second The Olivia Tremor Control album, Black Foliage, the band broke up, and Doss went on to re-start The Sunshine Fix. His first full length, Age of the Sun, was released in 2002, which was an album that found its roots in traditional pop harmonies owing much to The Zombies and The Beatles. In 2004, Doss released the less well received Green Imagination with the Sunshine Fix (which featured artwork and videos by Kevin Evans), and currently produces albums in his own studio in Athens. Bill Doss has a lovely voice and the ability to write excellent hooks that stick in your head.
While Bill was earnest and jovial in a low-key way at The Bottom Of The Hill, his interview answers are decidedly mystical in tone.
Bill Doss: The Beach Boys-i guess obviously harmonies; and on this record i tried out the brian wilson/phil spector trick of having as many instruments as tracks would allow to play certain melody lines in songs.
