McKnight at one time was the top ranking fighter pilot in the RAF with at least twenty three German planes to his credit. McKnight had been a protégé of Bader’s and when the young Canadian failed to return, Bader forgot his quiet poise and became enraged at the Germans. McKnight destroyed 16½ enemy aircraft, and was the first Canadian ace of the war.

McKnight left these portfolios for defence in 1989 and switched assignments yet again in 1991 when he succeeded Don Mazankowski as minister of agriculture. McKnight currently serves as chair of NAFTA Trade Consultants Inc. and Anvil Range Mining Corp. He is also on the board of directors of five different commercial enterprises and served as the honorary consul to Ecuador in 1995. McKnight introduced "check-off" legislation into the House of Commons to allow commodity groups to collect levies on domestic sales and imports to fund their commodity research and promotional activities.
