Smith was a staple at the World Series of Poker during the 1980s. He was involved in three final tables of the main event. At the 1981 and 1986 WSOP he placed 5th, but at the 1985 World Series of Poker he won the title, and $700,000. Smith died in 1997.


At the 2007 WSOP, decorations included giant banners of all past main event champions, including picture, name, and the year or years of victory. The exception was Smith, who was strangely absent, with just a large blank between 1984 and 1986. Poker insiders say this is because Binion's owns the rights to the picture that Harrah's wanted to use. It is believed Smith's absence will be correct by the 2008 Series.
