Born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne he grew up in Corby. After graduating from Cambridge University he became involved in computers, gaining a 1-year diploma in 1984. He began to write for for The Guardian in 1990, and in 1994 went to work there, setting up the paper's website. He left in 1996 to work as a freelance writer and consultant. In the last few years he has become well known for his controversial articles at the BBC, and has been criticised for advocating too much of a state interventionist approach to the internet.
