12. Biosphere Reserves and in-situ Conservation - R.K. Arora and R.S. Paroda (4334 words)
Each biosphere reserve, in order to be an effective unit of conservation and perpetuation of genetic diversity, should be of sufficiently large size and serve as a bench mark to measure the immediate and long-term impact of human interaction with the ecosystems.
Indian Biosphere Reserves Programme is intended to preserve representative biotic communities of these areas as a whole in the 14 potential biosphere reserves already identified, covering three fourths of the main biogeographical regions of the country.
It is important to remember that the proposed biosphere reserves have a considerable human population living and working within the area, and the conservation of the natural resources should ensure that human beings in that area benefit from the measures taken, without upsetting the natural ecosystem balance.
