The Birmingham Americans were a professional football team based in Birmingham, Alabama in the World Football League, an attempt to start a new major professional football league in the United States in competition with the established National Football League. They competed in the 1974 season and won the only championship game that the league ever staged. They played their home games at legendary Legion Field.
The 1975 entry in the WFL was known as the Birmingham Vulcans. and they played until the league folded in midseason. The Americans/Vulcans developed a more considerable following than was typical of most WFL teams, and at least some effort was expended in an attempt to get the team admitted into the NFL for the 1976 season, although unlike the similar and more extensive effort in Memphis which involved actual cash deposits toward season tickets it seemed to consist mainly of getting fans to sign a "statement of support" somewhat similar to a petition. When the Memphis effort failed, Vulcans followers were forced to accept the inevitable as well, and efforts to get the team admitted as an NFL franchise were abandoned.
The Vulcan statue of Birmingham, Alabama, is the largest cast iron statue in the world and the symbol of the city.
Vulcan was eventually re-erected at the Alabama State Fairgrounds, but the statue's arms were installed incorrectly, and he was without his spear, which had been lost en route from St. Louis.
Vulcan was removed during 1999 for a $14 million renovation process that saw the park and pedestal restored to its original 1938 appearance.
