Expansion to university status After the Six Day War in 1967, the West Bank, which had been occupied for the previous nineteen years by the country of Jordan (hence the name West Bank), was reconquered by Israel which then administratively ruled the territory. The college drew up plans in 1972 to provide a program of study up to the fourth year of university, leading to the award of a Bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences. It also started work on the construction of a new campus overlooking the town of Bir Zeit. This work was encouraged and supported by Israel, as was the development of other universities in the West Bank, as Israel felt that an educated populace was likely to favor peace with Israel.  Martyr's Memorial, taken in April 1997 a few days after the death of a Birzeit University student, Abdullah Khalil Salah Israelis who hoped for peaceful relations with the graduates of the university were disappointed. Because of continuous strife in the late 1970s and 1980s, and a pro PLO orientation of the university, Israel closed the campus several times. In the face of hostilities after the breakout of the first intifada in 1987, the Israeli authorities closed the university by military order on numerous occasions, including a closure of 51 months during the First Intifada, from 8 January 1988 until 29 April 1992 [1], although it continued to operate underground during that period. During that time, the university was perceived by Israel to be a launch point for attacks against Israel. The closure was seen as a means of fighting Palestinian militants.
