Bishan is a small neighbourhood of the city-state of Singapore situated in the Central-North, measuring approximately three by three kilometres. Primarily a housing estate, Bishan houses the upper-middle classes and flats there are relatively more expensive than in other estates due to its central location.

Transportation

Bishan is connected to the rest of Singapore via the Central Expressway. In addition, it has its own Mass Rapid Transit station on the North South MRT Line. It would serve as an Interchange Station for the Circle MRT Line when it is completed in 2008.


Education

As of 2004, Bishan houses eight primary schools and seven secondary schools, Bishan Park Secondary School, Catholic High School, Guangyang Secondary School, Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School, Peirce Secondary School, Raffles Institution and Whitley Secondary School.

Bishan town was originally known as Kampong San Teng, a quiet and rural area overrun with wild grass and plants.
Centrally located in Singapore, Bishan town is bounded on the north and east by Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Central Expressway, on the west by Upper Thomson Road and on the south by Braddell Road; with Marymount Road and Bishan Road cutting northwards in parallel across the town.
The town is nestled between Ang Mo Kio Town and Toa Payoh Town, with close proximity to the MacRitchie Reservoir.

Bishan derived its name from the large Cantonese burial ground, known as peck san ting (in pinyin is bi shan ting), which used to cover the area.
Bishan has also quite a bunch of urban legends and ghost stories mainly because it used to be a large cemetery.
