Encyclopedia > Bishop tuff

The Bishop Tuff is located in the Owens Valley, southeast of Mammoth Lakes, California. It is a welded tuff that formed 760,000 years ago as a rhyolitic pyroclastic flow during the eruption that created the Long Valley Caldera.


The Bishop Tuff covers nearly 2,200 square kilometers of area, with deposits ranging from 150 to 200 meters in thickness.
