Bishopville is a city located in Lee County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,670. It is the county seat of Lee County6.


Geography

Bishopville is located at 34°13'8" North, 80°14'56" West (34.219027, _80.248877)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.2 km˛ (2.4 mi˛). 6.1 km˛ (2.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.26% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,670 people, 1,438 households, and 907 families residing in the city. The population density is 600.4/km˛ (1,554.8/mi˛). There are 1,616 housing units at an average density of 264.4/km˛ (684.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 32.83% White, 65.83% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,438 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.8% are married couples living together, 29.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.12.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 78.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $24,400, and the median income for a family is $37,660. Males have a median income of $31,005 versus $18,635 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,140. 28.8% of the population and 23.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.7% of those under the age of 18 and 27.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
