AT the Airlines House on Parliament Street in Delhi, the spirit in the marketing and public relations department of Indian Airlines (IA) is festive.
According to Standard and Poor's industry survey of airlines conducted in March 2002, the average age of aircraft for major airlines in the US in 1999 was 11.5 years, with many airlines flying aircraft of an average age of seven years.
In general, airlines spend between 10-15% of their revenues on fuel; in IA's case this is over 20%.
Bangladesh national carrier to replace fleet of 17 aircraft (345 words)
The government has allowed private airlines to operate within Bangladesh for the past decade and in September said they would be permitted to fly on select international routes.
Privately run GMG Airlines, which was founded in 1998, has said it is ready to start international routes immediately once the government gives it the green light.
Three other airlines -- Air Bangladesh, Air Parbat and Bismillah Airlines -- have also expressed interest in flying beyond domestic routes but are considered further away in meeting license requirements.
