Studies show a decrease in the incidence of TD with use of bismuthsubsalicylate and with use of antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis.
Use of bismuthsubsalicylate should be avoided by persons who are allergic to aspirin, during pregnancy, and by persons taking certain other medications (e.g., anticoagulants, probenecid, or methotrexate).
Bismuthsubsalicylate also may be used as treatment: 1 fluid ounce or 2 262 mg tablets every 30 minutes for up to eight doses in a 24-hour period, which can be repeated on a second day.
Bismuth is a relatively rare metal found in the earth's crust at about the same abundance as silver and almost never occurring in the native state.
Bismuth is found free in nature and in such ores as bismuth glance and bismite which are primarily found in South America but are rare in the United States.
Bismuth is used in a wide variety of pigments ranging from cosmetics to the coloration of glass, decorative glazing, enameling and "metallic" automotive paints, as well as UV or heat-absorbing coatings for outer-space and strategic applications.
