The Bitterroot Range is a range of mountains along the Montana and United States. It is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains.


The range is named after the bitterroot, a small pink flower that is the state flower of Montana.


It neighbors the Bitterroot Valley and Bitterroot River. It gave its name to the Selway_Bitterroot Wilderness area and Bitterroot National Forest.

The territory also included a portion of the Idaho Territory west of the continental divide and east of the Bitteroot Range, which had been acquired by the United States in the Oregon Treaty, and originally included in the Oregon Territory.
This explanation may be an urban legend though, and there appear to be sources stating that the division along the Bitteroot range instead of the continental divide is exactly what was proposed.

Lewis and Clark were instructed to observe and record the entire range of natural history and ethnology of the areas they explored, and note possible resources which would support future settlement.
They traveled north to Lolo Pass where they crossed the Bitteroot Range on the Lolo Trail; this was the most difficult part of the journey.
After crossing the Bitteroots the party split at the Lolo Pass to add to the geographical knowledge they would gather.
