Bjarni Benediktsson (April 30, 1908 - July 10, 1970) was Prime Minister of Iceland from 14 November 1963 to 10 July 1970. He was a member of the Independence Party, which he led from 1961 to his death. He was mayor of Reykjavík 1940 - 1947. Prior to become Prime Minister Mr. Benediktsson had been member of pairlament since 1942 and served as a minister in all governments that the Independence party had been part of since 1947. Mr. Benediktsson was minister of Foreign affairs in 1949 when Iceland became a founding member of NATO.
