Black Earth is a village located in Dane County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,320. The village is located within the Town of Black Earth.


Geography

Black Earth is located at 43°8'12" North, 89°44'50" West (43.136769, -89.747418)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.7 km˛ (0.7 mi˛). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,320 people, 514 households, and 358 families residing in the village. The population density is 772.2/km˛ (1,991.6/mi˛). There are 527 housing units at an average density of 308.3/km˛ (795.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 96.97% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 514 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the village the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $51,548, and the median income for a family is $58,421. Males have a median income of $37,130 versus $28,828 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,363. 2.2% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 3.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
