Black Hills State University was founded in 1883 as Dakota Territorial Normal School for teacher training. The school could not be maintained and was closed in the spring of 1885. The school was re-opened in the fall of 1885 and became State Normal School in 1889 when South Dakota became a state. The school was renamed Black Hills Teachers College in 1941 and was renamed Black Hills State College in 1964. The school was finally renamed Black Hills State University by 1990. Black Hills State University is located in Spearfish, South Dakota and is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents.
