The original release had a gatefold sleeve and generic Vertigo 'swirl' inner bag. The inside of the sleeve featured the words "Black Sabbath" on the left side (spilling over slightly onto the right side) and on the right side, an inverted cross. A short poem was printed inside of this cross. Reportedly, the band had no input in the sleeve design and certainly have never used an inverted cross as artwork since. The traditional form of the Western Christian cross, known as the Latin cross. ...

Later vinyl releases on WWA and NEMS duplicated the gatefold sleeve, although certainly the NEMS sleeve was black-on-white, rather than the original silver-on-black.

Trivia

  • "Wicked World" was the first track recorded and on this Iommi plays a Fender Stratocaster. When this guitar broke, he switched to his (then) secondary guitar, a Gibson SG: he has played guitars modelled on the SG ever since.
  • The original American and Canadian releases of the album had "Wicked World" in place of "Evil Woman" due to conflicts over publishing rights, while the Castle Records 1996 European remaster of the album featured both. This same import package was reissued again by Sanctuary after their buy-out of Castle. Both "Evil Woman" and "Wicked World" are found in the Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978) box set version of the CD. Black Box was released in the US and Canada by Warner Bros./Rhino Records in 2004.
  • "Behind the Wall of Sleep" is a reference to the H.P. Lovecraft story Beyond the Wall of Sleep. Indeed, on several ROIO from the Reunion era Ozzy introduces the song as 'Beyond...'
  • Early versions of this album have Ozzy's name misspelled as "Ossie Osborne."
  • A CD version issued by Castle in France, 1986 featured a bonus track, a live version of "Tomorrow's Dream".[1][2] However, this was simply lifted from Live At Last, a process repeated across the five studio albums to which Castle had the rights.
  • The mysterious woman can be seen as a caricature on Green Day's "Dookie" album cover, in a Where's Waldo? sort of way.
  • Acid Mothers Temple released Starless and Bible Black Sabbath as a tribute album, which features a similar cover, except Kawabata Makoto is on the cover.

Black Sabbath is the self-titled debut album of the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath released in the UK on Friday the 13th, February 1970.
Many critics consider this album, especially the title track, to be definitive of the entire genre of heavy metal; it was arguably the first album to be classified as true heavy metal.
The influence of Led Zeppelin, especially the use of blues rhythm, on heavy metal is apparent on this album, as are that genre's themes related to the occult.
Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (535 words)
Heaven and Hell is an album by Black Sabbath, released in May 1980 (see 1980 in music).
This was the first album after the removal of singer Ozzy Osbourne from the band and was the first album featuring Ronnie James Dio as his replacement, who brought his own unique style of song writing and vocalisation to the band.
Sabbath had in fact begun demoing material with singer Dio before Ozzy was formally fired.
