Urd, urd bean, urad or black gram (Vigna mungo) is a bean grown in southern Asia. It is largely used to make dal from the split, dehusked seeds. It, along with mung bean was placed in Phaseolus but has been transferred to Vigna. It was at one point considered to belong to the same species as mung bean.
Blackgram's main advantages are that, being a legume, it does not require nitrogen fertiliser application, and has a relatively short (90-120 days) growth duration.
Blackgram is an indeterminate plant and produces pods in groups of 2-4 in leaf axils throughout the foliage.
Blackgram is susceptible to diseases caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses, but their effects are usually not severe in the growing crop.
