Every member of his crew believes heavily on the ideas of fate and destiny. From handing out exploding apples to other pirates to see who among them is fated to live, and shooting seagulls to find out which one will be destined to die a painful or quick death. Known history
Blackbeard was formerly a member of the Whitebeard Pirates second division led by Portgas D. Ace. Shanks also warned Whitebeard that Blackbeard was becoming stronger than him and had only joined his crew to stay hidden behind the massive shadow of the Whitebeard name, until he became strong enough to make his move. This time came when Blackbeard murdered a member of the Whitebeard Pirates to obtain a certain Devil Fruit, thus prompting his departure from the crew, and Ace's hunt for him. Blackbeard was also the one who gave Shanks the scars around his eye, a long time ago. Shanks also tells Whitebeard to call back Ace on his hunt for Blackbeard, as he was concerned about the timing of a confrontation between Ace and Blackbeard. Blackbeard happened to be in Jaya, at the same time Luffy was. Both Luffy and Blackbeard seem to strike up a rivalry when they nearly got into a fight over how they like or dislike one of the island tavern's food.[1] However, not long after that, he gave Luffy a friendly speech about how pirates should never stop dreaming[2]. Despite their similarities (and comical contrasts), it was revealed in the Jaya arc that Blackbeard was looking to take out a strong pirate to make a name for himself - and he chose Luffy after learning of his 100 million Belli bounty at the time. He however failed to catch them as they were blasted aside by the knock-up stream which took the Straw Hats to Skypiea. The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject matter. ...
After the events at Enies Lobby were publicized and the bounties of the Straw Hat Pirates raised, Blackbeard and his crew have decided to once again actively pursue the Straw Hats. However, Portgas D. Ace caught up to Blackbeard just as he was about to set sail off Banaro Island. Aside from avenging his crewmate, Ace reveals to Blackbeard that he's Luffy's brother and vowed that Blackbeard will regret it if he lays a single finger on Luffy. The two pirates engage in a furious battle, with the outcome as yet unrevealed.
Personality Blackbeard is very similar to Luffy in his desire to pursue his dreams and even encourages Luffy when they meet in Jaya. Blackbeard also treasures his crew and will give his own life to protect them, as he demonstrates when he shields them from Ace's fire attacks. Blackbeard is also very hearty and cheerful, as he happily greets Ace when they meet again as if they were old friends (even though he likely knew Ace had arrived to kill him). However, unlike Luffy, Blackbeard is not afraid to kill anyone in his way and has proven to be an exceptionaly ruthless opponent in battle. Blackbeard will also kill if it furthers his own agenda, as he has done to gain the powers of the Yami Yami no Mi; this resulted in him breaking one of the Pirate codes, never kill a crew-mate.
Powers and abilities
Blackbeard ,while using his devil fruit powers. Blackbeard has proven to be an extremely strong pirate. He possesses incredible natural strength, evident of his massive build, and similar endurance as he shrugged off one of Ace's attacks. When he gave Red-Haired Shanks the scars on his left eye, he had not eaten a devil fruit at the time, indicating even his basic strength is impressive enough without the aid of his powerful Devil Fruit. Blackbeard has eaten the Devil Fruit Yami Yami No Mi (Dark Dark Fruit). With it, he can become and control darkness, and also manipulate gravity by creating and spreading a black substance. Teach demonstrates that the "darkness" is a gravity or void which devours anything, able to pull in (much in the manner of a black hole) and crush the surrounding town into a pile of wood. Thanks to the Yami Yami No Mi, Blackbeard's powers were strong enough to expand the black substance in which he controls gravity, to surround half of the island of Banaro and hold back Ace's giant fireball that covered the other half of the island. Blackbeard also showed the ability of creating a vortex with the same properties as a gravitational pull. Due to the Yami Yami no Mi's gravitational ability, Blackbeard, unlike every other Logia user, cannot let attacks simply pass through him, meaning he takes damage like any human would, and perhaps even suffering more than others would. However, Blackbeard states that the risk this presents is well worth the advantages the fruit bestows upon him. The second, and most frightening power of the fruit is to nullify other Devil Fruit abilities through physical contact, allowing Teach to physically hit Ace. Teach states that this is because the Yami Yami no Mi truly holds the power of the devil.
The Letter D Blackbeard's true name is Marshall D. Teach, indicating a possible connection to the other "D." characters (Monkey D. Luffy, Portgas D. Ace, Gol D. Roger, Jaguar D. Saulo, Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon), as well as a connection to the cryptic "Will of D". In the One Piece fictional universe, many characters have the middle initial D. Manga/Anime influences Historically, Blackbeard was as fearsome a pirate as he is portrayed by Eiichiro Oda in One Piece. Blackbeard's pirate ship was discovered in South Carolina in 1996, and possibly influenced Oda when he began One Piece in 1997, evidenced by Oda's statements that Blackbeard was his favorite historical pirate. Trivia - Many of One Piece's characters are given distinct laughs. Blackbeard follows this tradition by starting his laughs with a "Zeh" sound (i.e Zeh ha ha ha ha!). In the FUNimation dub, he has a distinct laugh, however, not one that can be as easily identified.
- In the English version of the PS2 and Gamecube game One Piece Pirates' Carnival, as well as the edited for TV English dub, he has been named Marshall D. Teech, a very minor change.
- He appears as a playable character in the Nintendo DS game, One Piece: Gear Spirit. This marks his first time being playable in any One Piece game.
- Even though he is named Blackbeard, he has no beard. This is because the Japanese word for "beard" can also be translated as "mustache." He does have a black mustache.
- Blackbeard is the only Shichibukai revealed so far without an animal reference in his name.
