Encyclopedia > Blackfriars, Newcastle

Blackfriars is a restored 13th-century friary in Newcastle city centre, close to the City's China Town. These tranquil buildings served as a monasterial retreat for some 300 years until the dissolution of the monasteries. Blackfriars was then converted into a series of meeting rooms and almshouses for the destitute.

The buildings were restored in the 1980s, and now houses a range of craft workshops and a Cafe/Bar. Blackfriars also houses an exhibition which details the history of Newcastle. A large grassed courtyard superbly contrasts with the buzz of city life that surrounds it. The site is close to the most intact section of the old Town Walls.
