He trained with Verne Gagne and became a professional wrestler in the old American Wrestling Association. He then moved to the World Wide Wrestling Federation and became the heel Blackjack Mulligan. At first Mulligan, donning black trunks, black hat, black glove, and using the iron claw submission, seemed to be an imitation of AWA wrestling star Blackjack Lanza, managed by The Grand Wizard, Mulligan went on to great success in the Northeast. At first Mulligan, donning fl trunks, fl hat, fl glove and using the iron claw submission, seemed to be an imitation of AWA wrestling star Blackjack Lanza, but at 6 ft 9 in (206 cm), 340 lb (154 kg) and managed by The Grand Wizard, Mulligan went on to great success in the Northeast.
The brawls between Mulligan and André the Giant were not limited to the squared circle, as both men got into an infamous scuffle at the home of "The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez, tearing up the house and leading Fernandez to call the local authorites to help break up the fight.
