Blackwell's is a national chain of publishers and bookshops in the United Kingdom. Starting out as a bookshop selling academic books in Oxford, the firm grew to include a chain of bookshops and a publishing firm. The original shop, much expanded behind an unassuming front, still stands on Broad Street, Oxford; the company owns three bookstores on the same street covering different specialities, and several others in the town. Other Blackwell's bookshops also tend to have an academic emphasis and they are often located close to universities.
The company was founded in 1879 by Benjamin Henry Blackwell and is still owned by the Blackwell family. Companies within the chain include: Blackwell's Online Bookshop; Blackwell Ltd.; Blackwell's Publishing.
Blackwell's style is simpler, less cluttered than most of the drummers'; a tight snare sound dominates, propelling the rolling tattoo figures and often echoing the alto phrases.
Blackwell, one of the giants of modern jazz percussion, brought his band to the Eddie Moore Festival in 1992 and left this record of the performance.
Blackwell is a true leader of the Project, and listening to him alone on the CD is worth the price of admission.
