Encyclopedia > Blackwolf the Dragonmaster

Blackwolf the Dragonmaster, created and performed by Richard Washington, is the self-proclaimed Unofficial Wizard of New York City. Notorious for his now-legendary unexpected encounter with Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog in May 2002, this fictional Sorcerer turned occasional eccentric has dedicated himself to embarking on a continuing Quest to encourage his fellow New Yorkers to, in his own words, "imagine responsibly!" That Quest has its greatest statement in his website, the somewhat spookily named, yet entirely family-friendly Blackwolf the Dragonmaster's Dark Chambers. The legend, in brief

Blackwolf's first significant exposure to the media took place in April 2001, when, in the studios of Brooklyn, New York radio station WNYE-FM, he recorded his commentary on the subject of "Why New York Needs Wizards." On Tuesday, September 4th, 2001, the half-hour essay aired on WNYE-FM as part of the "Anything Goes!" series, sponsored by the nonprofit Teachers & Writers' Collaborative. One week later, the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks changed everything. Now, Blackwolf found himself facing a new Quest: to encourage his fellow New Yorkers, with whom he had since developed an all too obvious bond, to take stock in their City's previously hitherto ignored population of eccentrics in a positive and more understanding way; and to inspire those inhabitants of his newly adopted "Byg Appyl" to imagine responsibly and meaningfully. Eventually, aided by the wisdom and attitude of a burly Barbarian named Thor (Mundanely known as one Panayotis Konstantinos Venetis), and guided as always by the will of his seven Wizardly bosses, the Grand High Istari (also conceived in Richard Washington's mind's eye), Blackwolf persisted in his new Quest --- as he continues to do to this day. It was not until May 2002, however, that Fate --- in the form of George Lucas' Star Wars Saga — catapulted the Dragonmaster into unexpected cult status. On a certain Saturday, several Star Wars fans, dressed as their favorite characters from the space legend, from Darth Vader to Obi-wan Kenobi, from Padme Amidala to young Anakin Skywalker, had gathered in front of the famed Ziegfeld Theater, where they had formed a line to purchase tickets to see Attack of the Clones. Though neither they nor Blackwolf knew it at the time, the NBC show Late Night with Conan O'Brien had assigned Robert Smigel and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog to cover the festivities. The resulting 10-minute segment remains a landmark of modern comedy history. Suddenly, and without warning, Blackwolf, who had only made the pilgrimage to the Ziegfeld simply to see what all the fuss was about, had become a legend --- and now, Triumph was going to make sure that the Dragonmaster remained a legend! In August of that same summer, the Wizard and the "fresh hound" soon found themselves on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall, for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards; despite being lucky enough to make it backstage, the Dragonmaster never made it onstage. Blackwolf's most-talked about performance, however, occurred November 21st, 2002, when Triumph staged a live performance at the Bowery Ballroom, featuring several of his Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Saturday Night Live colleagues, along with Blackwolf. That performance became the nucleus of Triumph's debut album, Come Poop with Me, which was later nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. Even today, Blackwolf continues to share his wisdom with those who are willing to stop to take a moment to notice him; as he has been known to tell his listeners: "If I can inspire others to at least smile or bring happiness to someone else, I've done my job. What next for Blackwolf?

The Dragonmaster's future plans consist mostly of bringing his own story to the big screen, in an in-progress project called "Blackwolf the Dragonmaster's First Movie;" but since late February 2006, the Mage of Talisker has been negotiating with the videogame-inspired cable network G4 to produce and star in a series of one-minute comedic vignettes following his current adventures in New York City. The concept, if successful, could result in Blackwolf hosting his own weekly series! G4 (TV channel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia /**/ @import /skins-1. ...

Also worn around Blackwolf's neck is a large key-chain pendant, at the end of which can be found the key that unlocks his Diary of Magecraft; he alone can command the incantation which unlocks the Diary.
However, his status as Dragonmaster permits him, if need be, to wield certain of his spells against evil dragons in each of the three major branches in the Hexagon of Balance: lawful evil, unlawful evil and neutral evil.
In addition, as per his name and rank, Blackwolf is allied with the various Dragons of the Multiverse which are aligned with either lawful, unlawful or neutral goodness; and accordingly can assume mastery over them all should the situation be rendered necessary.
