The first public school in Romanian was established in Blaj in 1754. Blaj was also the first place to have Romanian written with the Latin alphabet instead of the Cyrillic alphabet in which it had traditionally been written. Interzicerea Bisericii Române Unite cu Roma de către autorităţile comuniste în octombrie 1948 a însemnat o grea lovitură pentru Blaj, deoarece întreaga elită intelectuală concentrată în Blaj a fost arestată şi dispersată.
Academia Teologică Greco-Catolică a fost închisă, iar Biblioteca Centrală din Blaj a fost distrusă.
