Shelton moved to Nashville, Tennessee from his hometown of Ada, Oklahoma at the age of 17. After several years in Nashville, he signed to Giant Records in 1998. Shortly after the release of his debut single, "Austin", in 2001, Giant Records folded, and Warner Bros. Records picked up the single, which reached No. 1.
