Blakely is a city located in Early County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,696. The city is the county seat of Early County6.


Geography

Blakely is located at 31°22'36" North, 84°56'2" West (31.376728, _84.933873)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 45.6 km˛ (17.6 mi˛). 45.2 km˛ (17.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.74% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,696 people, 2,060 households, and 1,413 families residing in the city. The population density is 125.9/km˛ (326.0/mi˛). There are 2,251 housing units at an average density of 49.7/km˛ (128.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 38.34% White, 59.97% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,060 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.5% are married couples living together, 29.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.25.


In the city the population is spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 81.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.2 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $20,250, and the median income for a family is $24,107. Males have a median income of $24,861 versus $16,116 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,012. 33.6% of the population and 29.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 50.7% of those under the age of 18 and 22.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
