Blanchard is a census-designated place located in Centre County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 621.


Geography

Blanchard is located at 41°3'45" North, 77°36'8" West (41.062447, -77.602237)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.1 km˛ (1.2 mi˛). 3.1 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 621 people, 242 households, and 180 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 199.8/km˛ (517.7/mi˛). There are 255 housing units at an average density of 82.0/km˛ (212.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 99.84% White, 0.00% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 242 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 21.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.1 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $31,042, and the median income for a family is $37,813. Males have a median income of $27,014 versus $19,183 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $17,836. 9.9% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

During the 1770s, Blanchard worked on designing heavier-than-air flying machines, including one based on a theory of rowing in the air currents with oars and a tiller.
Blanchard made his first successful ascent in a balloon he built himself on March 2, 1784.
In the same year, Blanchard gave the first successful demonstration of the use of a parachute when a basket containing a small animal was dropped from a balloon and parachuted to earth, foreshadowing later parachute descents of Andre Garnerin.
