In the middle of the 12th century, Blankenburg was involved into the fights between Barbarrossa, King of the Staufen and his opponent Heinrich the Lion, King of the Welfen.
After the Blankenburg Earls'line had died out, the town was charged back to the house of Dukes of Brunswick, and under their rulership Blankenburg was made a sovereign principality by Emperor Josef I. The power of Blankenburg refined himself thus even except for the cities lain in the upper Harz area like Braunlage and Hasselfelde.
Blankenburg developed in different directions in the following time, till in the second half of the 19th century it became a health-resort and kept this status through the two World Wars.
