Blessed Assurance is a Christian hymn. The lyrics were written by Fanny Crosby in 1873. The tune, which is known as “Assurance” was composed by Phoebe Knapp. The syllabic meter is 9.10.9.9 with a refrain of 9.9.9.9. The musical meter is 9/8. A hymn is a song specifically written as a song of praise, adoration or prayer, typically addressed to a god. ... Frances Jane Crosby (March 24, 1820 - February 12, 1915) usually known as Fanny Crosby, was one of the most prolific hymnists in history. ... Phoebe Knapp (March 9, 1839 – July 10, 1908) was a composer of music for hymns. ...


Crosby reported that Knapp played the melody for her on the piano. She then asked Crosby what the tune “said.” Crosby replied, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!” and went on to write three verses and a refrain for it.


“Blessed Assurance” was sung in the movie The Trip to Bountiful. The Trip to Bountiful is a 1985 film which tells the story of an elderly woman who wants to return home to the small town where she grew up, but is frequently stopped from leaving Houston, Texas by the daughter-in-law who insists that there is not enough money...
