Mother Marianne Cope, also called Blessed Marianne of Molokai, lived, worked and died for the lepers of Hawaii.

Mother Marianne Cope, also known as Maria Anna Barbara Koob and Blessed Marianne of Molokai (January 23, 1838August 9, 1918), is a Franciscan nun of the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church. Born in present-day Germany and entered religious life in Syracuse, New York, the Blessed Mother worked, lived and died for the lepers on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. She was not herself inflicted by the disease, a fact arguably declared to be miraculous considering her close contact with the patients over the course of several years. Mother Marianne Cope was the first person beatified by Pope Benedict XVI and raised to the title of Blessed, awaiting canonization into sainthood. Her feast day is January 23 celebrated each year by her followers, especially her religious order and in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu. Mother Marianne Cope traveled from Syracuse, New York to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1883. In 1888, she moved to Kalaupapa to help the ailing Father Damien de Veuster. Over 100 faithful followers from Hawaii attended the beatification ceremony. 300 followers from the Blessed Mother's religious order in New York was also in attendance. During the ceremony presided by Jose Cardinal Saraiva Martins, the Hawaiian hymn Makalapua was sung. It was a favorite of Mother Marianne Cope.

Mother Marianne was one of the six Sisters who eventually did so, going first to Honolulu and then to Molokai to open a hosue for "unprotected women and girls"(not simply agreeing but cheerfully acceding in the spirit of St Francis).
Mother Marianne's personality was tactful in the extreme and she was verys ensitive to the feelings of others; whenever she was required by duty to reprimand one of her Sisters, her eyes would fill with tears.
In her later years, Mother Marianne was dogged with ill health, lung haemorrhage and later dropsy, the latter calling her limbs to swell grotesquely and confining her to a wheelchair.
