Blind Melon is the debut rock and roll album by Blind Melon, released on September 14, 1992 (see 1992 in music). Blind Melon spent the remainder of 1993 on the road opening for Neil Young and Lenny Kravitz, before embarking on their own headlining tour of theaters in 1994 (during which time they were nominated for a pair of Grammy awards, for Best New Artist and Best Rock Performance).
Once the album was completed in the spring of 1995, Hoon checked himself into another rehab facility at the insistence of his bandmates, which pushed the release date of the album, titled Soup, to late summer.
Blind Melon decided to carry on under a different name and with a new singer -- placing ads in music papers and auditioning several prospective frontmen.

Listening back today, ‘Blind Melon’ is definitely one of the more ‘pure’ sounding rock records of the early ‘90s – modeled more after Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, rather than the usual suspects that all the grunge and industrial bands were studying at the time.
The grind of the road (Blind Melon toured for nearly two years solid) merged with the group’s sudden success proved to be a dangerous cocktail, as Hoon indulged in his drug of choice, cocaine.
Blind Melon’s self-titled debut is released on September 14, 1992.
