Ronald Mark Blomberg (born August 23, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia), nicknamed "Boomer," is a former Major League Baseball designated hitter, first baseman, and right fielder who played for the New York Yankees (1969, 1971-76) and Chicago White Sox (1978).
A perennial prospect for most of his career, Blomberg was selected by the Yankees in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 1967 amateur draft.
Blomberg's place in baseball history, however, is assured, as he has the distinction of being the first major leaguer to play a game as a designated hitter.
Werner von Blomberg was born in Stargard, Germany, on September 2, 1878.
Blomberg remained in the army and in 1920 was promoted to lieutenant colonel and was appointed Chief of Staff of the Doeberitz Brigade.
Blomberg believed Hitler's Night of the Long Knives massacre was justified to maintain order against Ernst Roehm's rowdy army of SA legions that threatened to eclipse the German Army itself by sheer manpower.
