Blowouts are sandy depressions caused by removal of material by wind. Although they generally remain small, they can expand up to kilometers in size and up to around 70m in depth. They are an important habitat for flora and fauna.
The Blowout was conceived in 1983 by the ASGARD Motorcycle Club.
An ideal friendship was formed between the ASGARD MC and Charles D. Reese (owner of Gulfport Dragway), Oluf Zierl (former editor of the local biker bulletin (SSB), Gene Stewart of Rex Distributors (Budweiser Brewing Co.) and Vincent Creel (editor of the Marquee of the Sun Herald).
The details worked out and by the third Blowout we switched to the Gulfport Dragway and the date was changed to the end of May (Memorial Day), which also symbolized the beginning of summer activities.
Blowouts are sandy depressions in a sand dune ecosystem (psammosere) caused by removal of material by wind.
A blowout can occur when something destroys an area of this vegetation, allowing the wind once again to start to move the sand in that area.
Causes of destruction include fire (natural or caused by humans) or in, extreme cases, trampling by feet, horses, cars, bicycles etc. Fire is the most common cause, however.
