History
It started as the homestead of Art and Norma Wixom. The leased a few vacation cabins and opened a store in 1914. Stoney DeMent leased the land and built a market called The Blue Jay Market in 1934. The store was named for the blue colored birds that live in the area. This later became the name of the town built up around it. The store also had a dance floor upstairs, but this was converted to hotel rooms a few years later to accomodate the crowds of tourists who came in the summer. Residents began to move to Blue Jay about 10 years later.
The BlueJay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a North American jay, a handsome bird with predominantly lavender-blue to mid-blue feathering from the top of the head to midway down the back.
As with other blue-hued birds, the BlueJay's coloration is not derived by pigments, but is the result of light refraction due to the internal structure of the feathers; if a bluejay feather is crushed, the blue-ness disappears as the structure is destroyed.
The BlueJay is the provincial bird of Prince Edward Island and gave its name to the Toronto BlueJays baseball team.
