The lagoon is fed by the water output of a nearby geothermal power plant. Superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run turbines that generate electricity. The complex is in the process of undergoing a refurbishment and a new restaurant is due to be completed soon. The changing room facilities were completed in early 2007 and can now accomodate more guests than before.
