Sapphire was considerably more cautious and rational than the rest of his Black Moon Compatriots. He preffered to work with droids over serving his unpredictable, easily swayed older brother. Sapphire, unlike anyone else, felt the loss of the dead Akayashi Sisters, but this was from a tactical standpoint; Sapphire had no love interests. Sapphire attempted to question the intentions of Wiseman, and the propensity for Prince Diamond to listen to everything he said, but Prince Diamond, accusing him of wanting the power for himself, telekinetically shattered a glass near Sapphires face, silencing him. When Prince Diamond kidnapped Sailor Moon and brought her to his Castle on Nemesis, she stumbled into Sapphires labratory, where he admitted that their plans were insensible and that she was guiltless, but nonetheless proceeded to strangle her. When Usagi transformed into Sailor Moon, he was knocked unconcious. Wiseman then hypnotized and lent Sapphire the power of 'death hands' before sending him to kill his brother. When attacked, Prince Diamond destroyed his brother, and didn't yet suspect that the so-called Wise Man was only using his clan untill they were no longer needed.
Anime Sapphire was portrayed more sympathetically in the anime version of Sailor Moon, just as the rest of his clan was. A past relationship is alluded to between Sapphire and the oldest Akayashi sister, Petz, even though they were never in the same scene together in the manga. In a touching flashback, Sapphire recalls growing up on bleak Nemisis with his brother, who promised him that one day they would go to earth and he would show him real flowers. Sapphire overheard the Wiseman talking out loud about how he was only using Prince Diamond and the others for his own goals, and, barely escaping with his life, Sapphire stole the power of the black crystal and took it to the Earth of the past. He was breifly reunited with Petz, and aided by the sailor Senshi, but Wiseman killed him before he could warn his brother about Wiseman's treachery. Prince Diamond was greatly saddened by his brother's death; he took Sapphires ailing body into his arms, and dissapeared. Blue Saphir is voiced by Tsutomu Kashiwakura.
