By the beginning of the 17th century China was exporting porcelain to Europe. In the 17th and 18th century, Oriental blue and white porcelain was highly prized in Europe and America. Enhanced by fine silver and gold mounts, it was collected by kings and princes. When Böttger made his discovery of porcelain-making at Meissen in Germany in 1707, Chinese porcelain was the inspiration. The Meissen factory was not initially successful but once it had conquered the technique, it produced its Onion patterns, based on a Chinese design and still produced today. When England started making Soft-paste porcelain nearly 40 years later, blue and white was again the inspiration. Worcester made both had-painted and printed designs, inspired by Chinoiseries.
