Prince Harry The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on February 22, 2007 that Harry, who is third in line to the throne, would possibly join his Blues and Royals regiment in Iraq as a “long-planned rotation of troops.” Britain’s Prince Harry was said to be “over the moon” about this, but any decision to send him has since come under review. Harry said he would be 'disappointed' if he were not sent but also that he would not resign from the army in protest. Families of currently serving soldiers have voiced concern over any decision to exempt Harry from combat situations. It has also been suggested that putting such a high profile person in an area of active insurgency puts the other members of his troop in added danger.[1] The deployment was expected in May or June of this year. The 22-year-old prince will be the first member of the royal family to serve in a war-zone in 25 years. His uncle, Prince Andrew, served as a helicopter pilot in the 1982 Falklands war against Argentina. On April 30, it was announced by Gen Sir Richard Dannatt that Prince Harry would be deployed to Iraq with his regiment to serve active duty, though this decision would be kept under review. After reviewing the situation, General Dannatt announced on the May 16, 2007 that Prince Harry would not be deployed to Iraq. Reasons given included a number of specific threat to the Prince which would also place those around him in danger. The media's widespread discussion of his deployment was also mentioned as a contributary factor. General Dannatt stated "I have decided today that Prince Harry will not deploy as a Troop Leader with his Squadron. I have come to this final decision following a further and wide round of consultation, including a visit to Iraq by myself at the end of last week"[2] As an officer, Prince Harry is in charge of 11 soldiers carrying out reconnaissance work using four armoured FV107 Scimitar vehicles, each with a crew of three. He holds the rank of Cornet, which is used by a small number of cavalry units including the Blues and Royals. It is the equivalent of the more usual rank of 2nd lieutenant. He is known to colleagues as Troop Commander Wales.[3] This refers to the armoured vehicle, for other uses see Scimitar (disambiguation) FV107 Scimitar is an armoured reconnaissance vehicle, although sometimes classed as a light tank used by the British Army. ...
