Bo Carpelan is a Finnishpoet. Born in 1926 to a bank clerk, he had an unhappy childhood spending time in internment camps operated by the Soviet Union during World War II. He used these traumatic experiences as the basis for much of his poetry. He published his first book of poems in 1946, and received his Ph.D. in 1960. He writes in Swedish (a tradition of literate Finns similar to French people of the 1800's writing in Latin.) His work is not widely available in English, however, one anthology, "Rooms Without Walls" is available from defunct book sellers.
