Robert "Bob" Essensa (b. January 14, 1965) is a former professional ice hockey goaltender, now retired. After being selected in the fourth round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, 71st overall, by the Winnipeg Jets, Essensa went on to a successful 15-year professional career that saw him play for the Jets, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Phoenix Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres, although he never won the Stanley Cup. After playing as the starting netminder in Winnipeg, Essensa had a poor 1993-94 NHL Season, and was dealt to Detroit just prior to the 1994-95 NHL lockout. Essensa continued to play in the IHL and AHL, but never again for Detroit. Although he had fetched a reasonable package of players when Winnipeg traded him, he was sent to Edmonton for future considerations. In Edmonton, Essensa reproved himself a legitimate NHL goaltender, taking the backup role and eventually splitting time with other netminders. Upon reaching free agency, the Oilers put a low priority on getting him resigned to backup Tommy Salo, and Phoenix signed him. In Vancouver, Essensa was initially given nicknames such as "Backup Bob" and "Sideshow Bob", indicating that he was expected to recieve very limited playing time behind established star Felix Potvin. Soon, however, Potvin proved incapable of handling the starting role in a city as intense as Vancouver, and Essensa was resorted to as a stopgap measure. He responded phenomenally, posting an 18-12-3 record and leading the Canucks back into the playoffs, where they were ousted in the first round by the eventual champions, the Colorado Avalanche.
