Biography

Gilder was born in Corvallis, Oregon and attended Corvallis High School. He later attended Arizona State University and walked on to the golf team there, later becoming the 1973 Western Athletic Conference individual golf champion.[1] He turned pro later that year and found success on the Tour quite rapidly, winning six tournaments between 1976 and 1983, including three in 1982. Gilder was a mainstay on the PGA Tour for many years, although he never won another tournament. He played on the 1983 Ryder Cup team. Bob Gilder holds the trophy after winning the Senior PGA tournament on the third playoff hole at the Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord, Mass.
Gilder was never out of the lead Sunday but made the playoff only after Jim Thorpe missed a birdie putt at the 18th that would have given him the victory.

Gilder's eyes welled up with tears as Fischer, City Council member Earnest Williams and other colleagues offered testimonials and high praise for his years of work as the former president of Tampa's NAACP chapter and his tireless efforts to bridge the gap between the races in St. Petersburg.
Although Gilder has received upwards of 1,000 awards, including the Governor's Medal, given to him by former Florida Gov. Claude Kirk for his mediation during the turmoil of 1968, he was thrilled to learn that a new annual award would be named after him.
