Goen was born and raised in Long Beach, California and upon graduation from San Diego State University in 1976 with a degree in telecommunications and film, one year later in 1977, he used his college radio experience to land a part-time job at KFOX radio in his native Long Beach, which led to his first full-time job as a disc jockey/producer for KPRO in Riverside, where he was promoted to work as a director. On April 11, 1993, he was hired to work on Entertainment Tonight as an substitute anchor and a reporter. Three years later, after his hiring, his predecessor John Tesh had left the show on May 30, 1996, to pursue his music career, and at that time, Goen was promoted to work with Mary Hart. When he enjoyed working on his very first day with ET, his charismatic reporting and charm gave him the impression of interviewing mostly of celebrities and musicians, from Nicole Kidman to Sir Elton John, among many others.
