Johnston worked briefly as a staff producer for Kapp Records, then for Columbia Records where he was assigned to work with Dylan. Their first album together was Highway 61 Revisited. After a couple years in New York, Johnston worked in Nashville, Tennessee for Columbia, then became an independent producer, most successfully with Lindisfarne on Fog on the Tyne, which topped the British album chart in 1972.
