Prior to being elected to the Legislature, Margett served as both Mayor and Councilman of the City of Arcadia and as Chairman of the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority.
Margett was named Legislator of the Year by the Safari Club International, the California Women in Agriculture, and the American Subcontractors Association of California, Inc. In 2002 he was honored as the University of California Alumni Legislator of the Year.
