BOBWareing, a veteran Labour backbencher, last night became the first MP to be disciplined under new "anti-sleaze" powers adopted by the House of Commons.
Sir Gordon said Mr Wareing should have registered both his shareholding and his directorship in Robert Wareing Ltd, since the £6,000 was clearly intended to benefit either him or the company of which he was a sole director.
The MP said he had not previously appreciated the distinction between directorships and shareholding under the rules of the House, and Sir Gordon acknowledged that the guidance was not as clear-cut as it should have been.
