Achievements

During Bright's tenure, he has led a major redevelopment of the downtown Montgomery area by public and private interests to bring visitors back to the formerly depressed downtown business district near the Alabama River. The city landed a new minor-league baseball team called the Montgomery Biscuits which started playing in 2004 at newly-developed Riverwalk Stadium. The Riverfront Amphitheatre opened the same year hosting concerts on the banks of the Alabama River where cotton and riverboats had once thrived, and the historic Union Street Station was revamped and its enormous covered Train Shed became a part-time concert venue with many national acts performing under its roof. The Montgomery Advertiser newspaper also relocated its offices to the riverfront district and a new high-rise hotel is under construction next to the Montgomery Civic Center which is also being renovated. A smaller performing arts center and an Intermodal Transportation Center are also part of the development plans by 2008.[1][2] Should also be noted that Bright pushed the sales tax increase to 10%. This was one of the most agressive sales taxes in the state, not excluding taxing food, medicine, clothing, and school supplies until modified in 2006. Bright also attempted to pass a bill taxing citizens of surrounding counties above the regular income tax rate for holding gainful emplyment within the city of Montgomery.

Hyundai

Bright was also instrumental in bringing automobile manufacturer Hyundai to the local area, which built its new North American headquarters in the far southern area of the city. Production began in 2005, bringing over 2,000 direct jobs plus thousands more from suppliers and a large boost to the local economy.[3] Hyundai is a South Korean group of companies founded by Chung Joo-young in 1947 as a construction company and was once South Koreas biggest conglomerate company (Jaebul). ...
