Bobby Rush (born November 10, 1940) is an Americanblues and R&B musician, composer and singer. He was born Emmit Ellis Jr. in Homer, Louisiana. His family relocated to Chicago in 1953, where he became part of the local blues scene. He is a purveyer of the Soul blues sound. He sometimes also uses elements from rap and funk. 2004's "FolkFunk" was a return to a more rootsier sound and came out on a German label. He appears in the mini series The Blues, produced by Martin Scorsese. Bobby Lee Rush (born November 23, 1946) has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing the 1st District of Illinois (map).
In 2000, Rush defeated challenger Barack Obama, who was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, in the Democratic primary for his seat.
On July 15, 2004, Rush became the second sitting Congressman, after Charles Rangel, to be arrested in as many days for protesting alleged human rights violations at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, DC.
