Biography

Raised in Arkansas and Millington, Tennessee, Whitlock began playing piano at many sessions at the legendary Stax Studios by the time he was a teenager. Whitlock was also the first white artist signed to Stax Records. Upon seeing him perform in a Memphis club, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett asked Whitlock to join their band as keyboardist. Whitlock began a friendship with Eric Clapton when Delaney & Bonnie and Friends toured with Clapton serving as their lead guitarist. Whitlock appeared on Clapton's first solo album in early 1970. Whitlock soon became part of Clapton's "Derek and the Dominos". Their first project was to serve as George Harrison's back-up band on All Things Must Pass in the spring of 1970. The Dominos went on to record the heralded Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs, with Whitlock co-writing many of the songs. He contributed piano or organ on most of the tracks and played guitar and sang lead vocal on his own "Thorn Tree in the Garden". During the 1970s Whitlock released four solo albums. The first one, self-titled, was released in 1972. Raw Velvet featured an uncredited Duane Allman on "Dearest I Wonder", one of the last tracks recorded before his death. After his 1976 album Rock Your Sox Off, Whitlock laid low for most of the 1980s and 1990s, living on a farm in Tipton county, Tennessee and doing session work. In 1999, he returned to music with It's About Time. Today Bobby is teamed up with wife CoCo Carmel and the two have released a live album titled "Other assorted Love Songs." They are also working on a new studio album (produced and engineered by Carmel, it features a new version of "Layla" with CoCo Carmel on sax), and they play acoustic sessions on Tuesday nights at the Saxon Pub in Austin, Texas, where the two moved in 2006. Delaney, Bonnie & Friends was a group started by Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, which featured artists such as Eric Clapton, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock, Jim Gordon, Leon Russell, Dave Mason, Duane Allman and even some appearances with George Harrison. ...
