Encyclopedia > Bodhas

The Bodhas are a group of non-muslim Animist Sasaks living on the slopes of Gunung Rinjani. They are sometimes classified as a separate tribe because their belief system is different from the rest of the Sasaks.

This tribe has the same magico-religious officials and institutions as the wetu telu, with the exception of course of the kiyai. The kiyai is the wetu telu religious official dealing with all aspects of the Muslim religion.

The Bodhas recognize the existence of five main gods, the highest of which is Batara Guru. He is followed by Batara Sakti, and then Batara Jeneng. They rule with their wives: Idadari, Sakti, and Idadari Jeneng. The Bodhas also recognize ghosts and spirits.

The Bodha religion is influenced to some extent by both Hindu and Buddhist concepts. Due to the name of their tribe, they are recognized as Buddhists by the Indonesian government.
